Nicole Johnson Baker

Nicole Johnson Baker, Miss America 1999, is an international diabetes advocate. She travels extensively promoting awareness, prevention, and early detection of the condition she shares. Under her consulting firm, Ms. Johnson Baker works as a lobbyist and advisor for patient groups and biotech companies, including Animas Corporation, Eli Lilly & Co, and GSP Consulting. She spends most of her time engaging lawmakers at both the state and federal levels on all diabetes-related matters.

Ms. Johnson Baker was recently named the first Ambassador for the International Diabetes Federation’s Life for a Child program, which advocates for endangered children with diabetes around the world. In 2005, Ms. Johnson Baker also launched a national essay competition and website called Diabetes Heroes. In addition, Ms. Johnson Baker co-hosts the new weekly television show on CNBC, “dLife.” She also writes monthly columns for Diabetes Health and Georgetown University’s MyCareTeam website.

Her three books include her autobiography, Living with Diabetes, which, in part, chronicles her experiences as Miss America 1999. She is busily completing a new book, her third cookbook, to be released in early 2006.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell recently appointed Ms. Johnson Baker to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. She also serves on numerous advisory boards, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Council of Public Representatives, and is a past board member of the American Diabetes Association. Ms. Johnson Baker has received numerous awards for her advocacy work including the C. Everett Koop Medal for Health Promotion and Awareness, the Victory Over Diabetes Medal from the Polish Diabetes Association, the Bill Gullikson Award from the Japan Diabetes Association and a Distinguished Alumni Award from Regent University.

Ms. Johnson Baker holds a master’s degree in journalism and is currently pursuing an MPH at the University of Pittsburgh.
