Enduring Activity: Pain Management and Opioids: Balancing Risks and Benefits

Learning Outcome: There is a need for advanced practice nurses to increase their knowledge and skills regarding the latest evidence for managing pain in patients and to apply that information to their practices to improve their patient outcomes. This newly updated course is designed to meet the FDA’s Opioid Analgesic REMS.
BY THE END OF THIS SESSION, THE LEARNER WILL BE ABLE TO:
- Describe the pathophysiology of pain as it relates to the concepts of pain management.
- Accurately assess patients in pain.
- Develop a safe and effective pain treatment plan.
- Identify evidence-based non-opioid options for the treatment of pain.
- Identify the risks and benefits of
opioid therapy. - Manage ongoing opioid therapy.
- Recognize behaviors that may be associated with opioid use disorder.
The course curriculum is fully compliant with the FDA’s September 2018 FDA Blueprint for Opioid Analgesic REMS Education and the 2022 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain. This session also meets many states’ requirements for controlled substances CE.
The curriculum was developed by the Collaborative for REMS Education (CO*RE) http://core-rems.org and is supported by an independent educational grant from the Opioid Analgesic REMS Program Companies (RPC).
Presented in partnership with the Nurse Practitioner HealthCare Foundation, a member of the CO*RE Collaborative, nine interdisciplinary organizations working together to improve pain management and prevent adverse outcomes.
